Foundry Networks provide networking solutions for many different application environments from small scale implementations to front end switches for large scale data centres.
For small implementations, Foundry offers its Fastiron Edge line of products. These provide low numbers of ports (up to 96 ports per switch), PSU resilience and wire speed switching. The standard FastIron Edge will support 10/100Mbps ports and Gigabit uplinks where as the FastIron Edge X Series will support 10/100/1000Mbps and 10GbE uplinks.
Hardware resilience is achieved by deploying a pair of switches and dual homing servers.
As the size of data centres increase, Foundry SuperX or RX products become more useful being based upon a chassis. These products offer a very high port density and performance, both series of switches being designed around a non-blocking architecture with very low latency and jitter. Each product range offers 10/100/1000Mbps ports and 10GbE uplinks.
The SuperX provides a single switch fabric and management blade, whilst the RX offers multiple switch fabrics and dual management modules which ultimately makes for an extremely reliable box. The RX also has the architecture to support 40GbE or 100GbE (though obviously neither is available as a technology at the current time) and can provide a greater capacity if required by trunking multiple ports together.
All the product ranges offer many ways of interconnecting the switches, in a very resilient manner, making the time to reconverge following a failure fast (less than a second). Interconnecting to other vendor equipment is not a problem either as many standards based methods are available.
Foundry ServerIron products are high performance layer 4 to 7 applications switches which would typically sit at the front end of the data centre, allowing multiple web servers to be connected in a resilient and scalable manner. As well as providing server load balancing functions, these switches also provide content switching, SSL acceleration and security, all with very availability.
SecureIron has been developed from ServerIron and currently provides the same security features of the ServerIron product line. The SecureIron can therefore be deployed where the more advanced functionality of the ServerIron is not required. SecureIron is typically deployed at the front end of the data centre where a level of security is required between the data centre and the internal networks. It can also be deployed with traditional firewalls to manage traffic prior to it getting to the firewalls, including mitigating DOS attacks and port scans - only allowing genuine traffic through.
