Network Appliance and Oracle enable the consolidation of data and storage from many servers using simple but powerful tools that help manage storage efficiently in a mixed networking environment.
Joint testing, integration and validation ensures full interoperability, reducing complexity to provide a better return on investment and a lower total cost of ownership.

Once only an interest to the scientific community, grid computing has become far more mainstream with the introduction of distributed databases, clusters, communications, and network storage, allowing for easy leveraging of existing IT infrastructure.
Enterprise grid computing links an organisation’s systems so users can shift workloads across resources easily and seamlessly. The entire computing infrastructure becomes a single utility, providing service and information wherever and whenever needed.
Oracle enables the grid with Oracle Database 10g, along with a NetApp flexible storage architecture. Storage can be added incrementally when needed with zero database or business application downtime, making NetApp ideally suited for Oracle Databases deployed in enterprise grid environments.
Database Consolidation
Protocol agnostic NetApp storage makes it easy to consolidate databases. NetApp offers a truly unified storage platform (in the form of NetApp Filers) that allows database connections through NFS mounts, leveraging existing IP infrastructure (iSCSI) or via utilising Fibre Channel connectivity in an existing SAN. Multiple protocols can be simultaneously used on the same filer, and can be accessed by Linux, Unix, Windows NT, and web-based servers and clients, also allowing support for both block and file access at the same time.
Storage Virtualisation
NetApp Filer storage is provisioned at the logical level, rather than physical level, meaning that physical storage can be shared among all data types across the grid allowing a high degree of flexibility and maximising resource utilisation. NetApp Software tools such as FilerView, DataFabric Manager, and SnapDrive allows storage to be quickly allocated and added without consideration of physical location.
Enhanced Manageability
NetApp storage uses the innovative Write Anywhere File Layout (WAFL) system incorporating NetApp technology such as Snapshot. The WAFL system does not overwrite existing blocks of data but instead writes a new block each time, updating the 'pointers' that indicate the location of the block. NetApp tools streamline asynchronous and synchronous mirroring, data migration, backup, and archiving.
Disaster Recovery
Oracle information stored on NetApp can be quickly replicated to one or many locations using SnapMirror. Disaster recovery plans can be implemented quickly and effectively without added administration costs.
