Grid Computing: Oracle 10g on NetApp Storage

Oracle10g allows companies to begin evolving their IT toward a grid computing model. From storage, to databases, application servers, and applications, Oracle's new technology addresses the requirements of grid computing.

Together, Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Application Server 10g, and Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g, provide the first complete grid infrastructure software.

Grid Computing

Grid computing is the coordinated use of a large number of servers and storage acting as one computer. Businesses no longer need to worry about spikes in demand and the cost of maintaining excess capacity. Computing power is now available when you need it.

Grids are built with low cost modular components, so you can start small and preserve your investment as your business grows. Turn 64 small servers into a giant mainframe. It's fast, it's cheap... and it never breaks. When a server goes down, your system keeps on running. Oracle Grid Computing includes:

  • Computer power delivered on demand
  • Automatic Load Balancing of your systems
  • Easy management of your IT systems with Grid Control

Oracle 10g on NetApp

NetApp

Network Appliance (NetApp) is the market leader in NAS storage technology. Their storage "appliances" are designed around the philosophy of "Keeping Storage Simple".

Historically companies have always looked to SAN based storage such as HDS or EMC for high-end datacentre storage. Along with SAN's come complexity, expense, and lack of flexibility. Often the cost of connecting the server to a SAN exceeds the actual cost of the server(!)

These are the issues Network Appliance has addressed with their storage appliances. They are to doing to the storage industry what Cisco did to the network industry 10 years ago.

NetApp storage solutions complement Oracle Database 10g by enabling data provisioning, high performance, and continuous availability. Clusters of high-performing Linux servers combined with NetApp storage, is an ideal architecture for the CPU and data provisioning benefits of Oracle's grid computing software.

NetApp storage systems support a wide range of architectures from SAN to NAS with protocols such as FCP, NFS, iSCSI, and DAFS, which can make enterprise grid computing very flexible. All these data serving mechanisms are built into the same architecture and that means lower complexity and higher manageability to build and operate an enterprise grid architecture.
